How fees work

What sets your fee, when you see it, and what to ask your plan. We give the fee in writing before you start.

  • Insurance we work with

Soften is in network with some plans and out of network with others, and your plan decides what it pays. We do not bill Medicare or Medicaid, and we are glad to suggest colleagues who do.

    • Most PPO plans

    • Some employer and exchange plans

    • Employee assistance programs

  • If you pay yourself

Your fee depends on the clinician and on the length of the session: 50 minutes for one person, 80 for couples. We give you the exact fee in writing before you start, and you pay by card at the end of each session, including HSA and FSA cards. A limited number of reduced-fee spots are open; ask how to request one. Please give 24 hours' notice to change an appointment.

  • Receipts for reimbursement

Each month we can give you an itemized receipt, called a superbill, with the dates and kind of each session. Your plan may reimburse part of out-of-network care when you send it in, and it decides whether it pays anything. The superbill carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see.

  • An estimate in advance

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We give you a written one before your first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

  • Checking your benefits

Our front desk checks your plan's mental health benefits before your first session and tells you what it finds, in writing. If you would rather check yourself, call the number on your card and ask about outpatient mental health visits.

  • What the first visit includes

A first session is 50 minutes, or 80 for couples. You and your clinician talk about what you want from therapy, the clinician explains privacy and its limits, and you decide whether to go on. The fee is the one we gave you in writing.
