Anderson, South Carolina

Meet your therapist before you book

Soften is a six-clinician counseling practice in Anderson for adults and couples. Watch a short hello from each of us, then choose who you would like to start with.

Who we see

Who Soften is for, and who it is not

We are a practice for adults and couples. If you are not sure we are the right fit, ask: we will say so, and suggest someone who is.

  • Adults, one on one

Regular, private sessions with a licensed clinician, at a pace you set.

  • Couples, together

Two people and one clinician, in 80-minute sessions.

  • In the office or by video

Our downtown Anderson office, or a video visit, with clinicians licensed in South Carolina.

  • Not a fit

We do not see children or teens, prescribe medication or provide emergency care. We help you find those.

Pick a time for a first session

Choose a time on our own scheduling page. Your clinician is not chosen for you: watch the hellos below first, or write to us and we will suggest someone.

Services

Three ways to meet with us

Every service begins with a conversation about what you want. Your clinician explains how they work before you agree to anything.

  • Individual therapy

Fifty minutes, one on one, for adults who want a regular place to talk.

    About individual therapy
  • Couples therapy

Eighty minutes, two people and one clinician, in the office or by video.

  • Video sessions

The same sessions from your home, with clinicians licensed in South Carolina.

How it works

From your first message to your first session

No forms to fill in before you have talked to a person, and no surprises about cost.

  • You write or call, and we answer within one business day

  • We suggest a clinician, or you choose from the hellos

  • You get your fee, or your estimate, in writing

  • You fill in intake on our secure portal

  • You meet, in the office or by video

Our clinicians

Six clinicians, each with a two-minute hello

Each clinician has a short video introduction, so you can hear who you would be talking to. Pick someone, or tell us what you are looking for and we will suggest a match.

    Clifton Crockett

    Clinical social worker

    • Licensed Independent Social Worker, Clinical Practice (LISW-CP) · SC Lic. # 000000

Intake

Start intake the way you will pay

Intake forms live on our own portal, not on this site. Choose the path that matches how you plan to pay, and the portal asks only what that path needs.

How fees work

The answers to what nearly everyone asks before a first session.

  • Insurance we work with

Soften is in network with some plans and out of network with others, and your plan decides what it pays. We do not bill Medicare or Medicaid, and we are glad to suggest colleagues who do.

    • Most PPO plans

    • Some employer and exchange plans

    • Employee assistance programs

  • If you pay yourself

Your fee depends on the clinician and the length of the session. We give you the exact fee in writing before you start, and a limited number of reduced-fee spots are open. HSA and FSA cards work.

  • Receipts for reimbursement

Each month we can give you an itemized receipt, called a superbill, with the dates and kind of each session. Your plan may reimburse part of out-of-network care when you send it in, and it decides whether it pays anything. The superbill carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see.

  • An estimate in advance

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We give you a written one before your first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

  • Checking your benefits

Our front desk checks your plan's mental health benefits before your first session and tells you what it finds, in writing. If you would rather check yourself, call the number on your card and ask about outpatient mental health visits.

Questions

What people ask us first

More answers are on the questions page.

Do you take my insurance?

Some plans, yes. We are in network with some plans and out of network with others, and we do not bill Medicare or Medicaid. Tell us your plan when you write, and our front desk checks your mental health benefits before your first session. If you would rather see someone who bills your plan, we are glad to suggest colleagues.

How much does it cost, and how do fees work?

Your fee depends on the clinician and the length of the session: 50 minutes for one person, 80 for couples. We give you the exact fee in writing before you start, and a limited number of reduced-fee spots are open, so ask. How fees work explains the rest.

What happens in the first session?

You and your clinician talk about what you would like from therapy, and the clinician explains how privacy works and what its limits are. Then you decide whether to continue with them. Your first session page walks through it.

Are your clinicians licensed where I live?

Each clinician is licensed in South Carolina, and the license line under each name says how. For video sessions you need to be in South Carolina during the session. You can verify any license with the state board.

What is confidential, and what are the limits?

What you say in session stays private, and we share your records only as the law allows. The law requires a clinician to act if someone is at serious risk of harm, or if a child or a vulnerable adult is being abused or neglected. Your clinician explains this in plain words before you begin.

Can you see my teen?

Soften sees adults and couples. If you are looking for a teen therapist, we are glad to suggest practices that do.
