Questions
What nearly everyone asks
If yours is not here, write to us.
Do you take my insurance?
Some plans, yes. We are in network with some plans and out of network with others, and we do not bill Medicare or Medicaid. Tell us your plan when you write, and our front desk checks your mental health benefits before your first session. If you would rather see someone who bills your plan, we are glad to suggest colleagues.
What is a superbill, and can I use it?
A superbill is an itemized monthly receipt with the dates and kind of each session, which some plans accept as a claim. Your plan may reimburse part of out-of-network care when you send it in, and it decides whether it pays anything, so ask it before you start. The superbill carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see.
What is a Good Faith Estimate?
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We give you one before your first session. If your final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.
How much does it cost, and how do fees work?
Your fee depends on the clinician and the length of the session: 50 minutes for one person, 80 for couples. We give you the exact fee in writing before you start, and a limited number of reduced-fee spots are open, so ask. How fees work explains the rest.
Can I use an HSA or FSA card?
Most health savings and flexible spending cards work for therapy sessions. Your plan administrator can confirm that yours does, and our receipts have what it asks for.
What happens in the first session?
You and your clinician talk about what you would like from therapy, and the clinician explains how privacy works and what its limits are. Then you decide whether to continue with them. Your first session page walks through it.
How often will we meet, and for how long?
A session is 50 minutes, or 80 for couples. Your clinician sets the pace with you, and many people start with a weekly session. We do not promise a number of sessions.
Are your clinicians licensed where I live?
Each clinician is licensed in South Carolina, and the license line under each name says how. For video sessions you need to be in South Carolina during the session. You can verify any license with the state board.
What do I do in a crisis?
Call or text 988, any time, or call 911 in an emergency. This site and our messages are not monitored around the clock, so please do not wait for us to answer.
What is confidential, and what are the limits?
What you say in session stays private, and we share your records only as the law allows. The law requires a clinician to act if someone is at serious risk of harm, or if a child or a vulnerable adult is being abused or neglected. Your clinician explains this in plain words before you begin.
Can you see my teen?
Soften sees adults and couples. If you are looking for a teen therapist, we are glad to suggest practices that do.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please give us 24 hours' notice to change or cancel a session. A late change may be charged at the session fee, and we tell you how in writing before you start.
